Flotilla History

Flotilla 24-12 was initially established as Flotilla 17-12 of Prospect, Connecticut on 24 May 1969. At that time, the flotilla was part of Division XVII in the old 3rd Coast Guard District.

Following are excerpts from the minutes of the first flotilla meeting and charter dinner of Flotilla 17-12, as recorded by Anne Farrell, FSO-SR: The charter dinner was held at the Fieldstone Restaurant in Prospect. Peter Thomsen, FSO-MT was the master of ceremonies for the affair. Following the introduction of invited military officers, District Commodore Edwin Wimperis read the charter. The new members present were then sworn in. The next item of business was the installation of the Commander for the new flotilla. Herbert Farrell Sr., chairman of the nominating committee, nominated Richard Williams for Commander of Flotilla 17-12. The motion carried and the secretary cast one vote for Mr. Williams. Wesgarth Trayner was duly elected as Flotilla Vice Commander. Commodore Wimperis then swore them in. Louis Giordano, VCP XVII presented the Coast Guard Auxiliary ensign to Mr. Williams and presented officer pennants to both Mr. Williams and Mr. Trayner. After some other remarks and presentations, Commander W.B. Alvey, Director of Auxiliary for the Third Coast Guard District (NA) addressed the group. Commander Alvey complimented the members of the new flotilla and Division XVII for getting Flotilla 17-12 started. He then presented the Flotilla Commander with the charter.

On January 1, 1997, in the realignment of the Coast Guard Auxiliary, Flotilla 17-12 was reassigned to the newly established Division 24 and was re-designated as Flotilla 24-12.

During the second half of 1997 the flotilla relocated its base of operations to Southbury, Connecticut and changed its name to Southbury Coast Guard Auxiliary.

In December 2002 the flotilla moved into its present home at the David S. Miles American Legion Hall in Oxford, CT.
